It’s great to know that when you see the FSC logo on a label, you can buy products with confidence that you are helping to ensure our forests are alive for generations to come.
Naturally, as a company we only support supplying merchants & mills who use FSC products and care about the environment, but now Calco are going one better with our Calco2 initiative.
In 2020 we will begin planting the good old British Oak tree in the UK whilst supporting the Woodland trust. For 12 months this beauty will be our focus, just One Oak tree can absorb one tonne of Carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old!
In England the oak has for centuries been a national symbol of strength and survival. It has played an important part in our culture – couples were wed under ancient oaks in Oliver Cromwell’s time, the festive Yule Log was traditionally cut from oak, it features on the 1987 pound coin and is the inspiration for the emblem of many environmentally focused organisations, including the Woodland Trust.
Plantations in Yorkshire & Cornwall will be the primary beneficiaries, so why not help us gather the momentum when you place an online order and get your company name in the ‘Hall of Fame’ UK plant a tree page. Better still, join us for our family planting days!
The oak is a large deciduous tree up to 20-40m tall. In England, the English oak has assumed the status of a national emblem. As common oaks mature they form a broad and spreading crown with sturdy branches beneath. Their open canopy enables light to penetrate through to the woodland floor, allowing bluebells and primroses to grow below. Their smooth and silvery brown bark becomes rugged and deeply fissured with age. Oak tree growth is particularly rapid in youth but gradually slows at around 120 years. Oaks even shorten with age in order to extend their lifespan.
Unfortunately most UK paper mills closed down in the last 30 years due to the competition from Europe, the far east & China. Throw in the pot Brexit, foreign owned pulp mills, currency exchange rates and the need is obvious for change.
We are hoping to start the revolution and bring paper manufacturing back to the UK in lots of different ways, tree planting being just one of them, why not join in?
